Who are we?
A welcoming South Wales community for amateur radio, practical experiment, local history, and making contacts around the world.
A society with a signal history
Barry Amateur Radio Society, or B.A.R.S., was formed in 1965 as a student-union society, supported by the science department at Barry College of Further Education. That close relationship gave early members space, equipment, and the confidence to take on ambitious radio projects.
More than half a century later, the same spirit remains: a club where people can learn, experiment, operate, share their knowledge, and enjoy the remarkable reach of amateur radio.
Special events
From the National Eisteddfod in Barry to stations aboard historic ships and at landmark locations, B.A.R.S. has brought amateur radio to memorable public events.
Marconi heritage
The society has long commemorated the Marconi-Kemp Bristol Channel tests. Members have operated from Flat Holm as GB5FI to honour that pioneering radio history.
On the air
Contest operation, technical projects, portable stations, and international contacts remain central to the club. B.A.R.S. has also represented Wales through calls including GW8K.
